What to know about Intercity Transport in Japan

Japan's intercity booking is operator and corridor specific. SmartEX is the official English reservation service for the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen corridor, including Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Hiroshima and Hakata. It does not cover every Shinkansen or conventional train. Travelers using a JAPAN RAIL PASS should reserve through the official pass website, a reserved-seat machine or a JR ticket office, not buy an ordinary SmartEX ticket by mistake. The smartEX app is currently downloadable in the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand. Taiwan uses the separate ExpressRide app. The SmartEX website is the broader fallback. Registration requires a supported card and 3D Secure; the operator confirms that debit, prepaid, overseas-settlement and some other cards can fail. Current traveler reports show that website registration can succeed when the app authentication flow does not, but a second card and station purchase remain important fallbacks. The old SmartEX round-trip discount ended on March 31, 2026, so older guides may quote a product that no longer exists. Save the QR ticket or pickup code and understand whether an IC card is linked. Baggage with total dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm needs a seat with an oversized-baggage area on the covered Shinkansen; larger items cannot be brought aboard. Popular holiday trains can sell out. For JR East, Hokkaido and other corridors, use the relevant official operator service. Confirm the station because Tokyo and Shin-Osaka are not interchangeable with every local stop, and leave a generous buffer before an international flight.

Pro tip: Use the website if the app or 3D Secure fails. SmartEX is corridor-specific and is not the JAPAN RAIL PASS booking channel.
