Banking and financial services, curated for travelers visiting Kenya.
A short-stay visitor does not need a Kenyan bank app. The practical setup is a registered M-PESA wallet if desired, Kenyan-shilling cash, a travel-enabled Visa or Mastercard and a second card kept separately. M-PESA dominates many everyday payments, but cards remain useful at formal hotels, airlines, larger restaurants, malls and official online portals. Cash is still important for small transport, tips, remote areas and any moment when a network or card terminal fails. Use ATMs attached to a bank, reputable hotel or secure shopping center, inspect the machine and keep the withdrawal private. Fees, limits and card compatibility depend on both the Kenyan ATM and the home issuer, so review the amount and any offered currency conversion before accepting. Withdraw before leaving major towns because reliable ATMs can be scarce near parks and on remote routes. The Central Bank of Kenya's indicative exchange rates are a useful reference, not the retail rate a card, ATM or bureau must give. Avoid carrying a large visible cash balance, split backup funds and know how to freeze each card. Wise or Revolut can be useful only when the traveler already has a suitable account, card or M-PESA transfer route. Neither deserves to be presented as a required Kenya download. Do not open a local bank account or install a Kenyan banking app merely for a holiday, and never hand a card, PIN or OTP to someone offering to help at an ATM.
