What to know about Intercity Transport in Kenya

BuuPass is the most useful general app for comparing and booking participating Kenyan intercity buses, with seat selection and payment by M-PESA, Airtel Money, Visa or Mastercard. Its consumer iPhone app launched in July 2026, so older advice describing it as Android-only is stale. Coverage is substantial but not complete, and a failed payment is not a ticket. Confirm the operator, terminal, boarding point, date, time and payment result, then save the ticket and reference offline. Recent travelers report fake bus sites and WhatsApp wallets, so pay through BuuPass, the operator's verified site or an official office rather than an unsolicited number. For the Madaraka Express between Nairobi and Mombasa, use Kenya Railways' official metickets.krc.co.ke site, *639# on Safaricom or a station counter. There is no verified official Kenya Railways consumer app. The passenger name and original identification must match, and Kenya Railways advises arriving at least 60 minutes before departure. Kenya Airways and FlyJambojet are optional only when the itinerary uses those airlines; Safarilink remains a current airline but booking is through its verified website, not a confirmed app. Allow generous ground-transfer and self-connection time because Nairobi's main rail and domestic flight terminals are not interchangeable. Current official advice warns about long-distance bus and minibus safety, so check the operator and favor daylight road travel where practical.
