Banking and financial services, curated for travelers visiting Puerto Rico.
No Puerto Rican banking or finance app is useful for a normal short visit. Local bank apps and ATH Móvil serve existing customers and residents, while opening an account is a regulated financial relationship rather than an arrival task. Use the existing bank and card apps from home to enable transaction alerts, check balances, freeze a lost card, and contact the issuer through a trusted channel. Install them, confirm the password, and complete device or phone verification before departure. Keep the issuer's international number and the last four digits of each card somewhere separate from the wallet and phone. Carry a backup card from a separate account or network, plus limited cash. Puerto Rico uses U.S. dollars, but a non-U.S. card may still incur the home issuer's foreign transaction or ATM fees. A travel card or Wise account can be useful only if the traveler already qualifies for it in the country of residence; it is not Puerto Rico-specific and it does not remove local ATM fees or guarantee acceptance. Avoid financial activity on untrusted public Wi-Fi, never share a one-time code, and use only the institution's published app or site. Travelers whose domestic health coverage does not extend to Puerto Rico should arrange suitable medical and evacuation insurance and maintain accessible emergency funds. The best financial preparation is account access, card redundancy, cash backup, and insurance, not another local download.
