What to know about Transit in Rwanda

Kigali's formal buses use the Tap&Go fare system, and the physical smart card remains the dependable visitor tool. Kigali Bus Services explicitly says a passenger cannot travel without a valid card with enough credit. Buy and top up one through an official bus terminal, agent, or kiosk before boarding, and ask staff to confirm the correct platform and route. The current Tap&Go Android app was updated in October 2025 and describes mobile ticket management. AC Group also says the app can top up a card and buy tickets for upcountry travel. The iOS listing is much older, so do not make the phone your only fare credential. App top-up may still depend on a local Mobile Money account, while a physical card loaded through an agent avoids that requirement. Keep the card until the trip is complete and check the balance before the next ride. Buses are useful and inexpensive but can be crowded, infrequent, or full before reaching an intermediate stop. Allow time and avoid treating a published schedule as a guaranteed live departure. Google Maps is not a dependable Kigali bus planner. Gerayo launched in 2026 with route and stop information sourced from public RURA data, but it is independent, has a very small installed base, and even its store copy contains unverified feature claims. It may be tested as a reference, not trusted for a connection. For a first trip, ask the accommodation or station staff for the current route and destination name. Keep valuables secured in crowds. If arriving with luggage, late at night, or during heavy rain, Move or YEGO is often more practical than learning the bus network immediately.

The official mobile companion to Rwanda's bus smart-card system for managing tickets and eligible top-ups.

Pro tip: Still buy and load a physical Tap&Go card through an official terminal or agent. The app is useful, but it should not be your only fare credential.
