What to know about Messaging in Thailand

LINE is Thailand's dominant local messaging and service channel. It can be genuinely useful when a hotel, clinic, dive shop, tour operator, restaurant or local contact publishes a LINE account or QR code. Download and verify it before travel if the itinerary includes locally arranged activities, but do not assume every traveler needs to replace WhatsApp. International hotels and tour companies may use WhatsApp, email or their own booking chat instead. Keep the original phone number available for verification, add an email or other recovery method and protect the account with the available security controls. A familiar display name, logo or Thai number does not prove that a message is genuine. If a provider changes bank details, asks for a new deposit, requests a passport image or sends a link to complete immigration paperwork, verify the request through an independently published website or phone number. Do not share one-time codes. Use live location only with a trusted person for a specific pickup and stop sharing afterward. Save booking confirmations, addresses, emergency numbers and insurance details outside the messaging app. LINE calls require data and are not a substitute for emergency calling. Telegram and other chat apps do not add a consistent arrival benefit for most visitors and should not be listed simply because some residents use them.
