What to know about Navigation in Thailand

Google Maps is the best general map for saved places, walking, driving and monitoring app rides, but its public-transport directions are not equally reliable in every Thai city or on every Bangkok bus route. Download offline areas for each destination and save the hotel entrance, airport terminal, pier, railway station and vehicle-rental return before leaving dependable coverage. Offline maps do not contain live traffic, closures, ferry changes or safety warnings. Bangkok addresses can refer to a long road or soi with several entrances, and island properties may sit beyond the pin. Ask the accommodation for a map pin plus a written landmark. For Bangkok buses, compare the route with ViaBus and information at the stop. For BTS, MRT and trains, use the operator's current map and signs. Do not follow a walking route onto an expressway, private road, unlit track or flooded path. On islands and in mountain areas, an app travel time can ignore steep roads, weather and poor surfaces. A rental scooter should never be chosen only because the map labels a route short; check licensing, helmet, insurance and road conditions. Save destination names in Thai so a driver or station employee can help when romanized spellings differ.
