Install BGTOLL only if the trip involves driving a vehicle that needs a Bulgarian e-vignette. It is the official National Toll Administration app for purchasing e-vignettes, checking validity and storing receipts. A rental car may already have a valid vignette, so check the rental agreement and plate before buying another. Bulgaria's road authority warned in January 2026 that unofficial sellers can add hidden or inflated fees. Use BGTOLL, bgtoll.bg or an official partner. Enter the registration country and plate exactly, review the validity start date and vehicle category, then save the receipt and confirm the vignette status. Do this before entering a paid road. For emergencies, call 112. It is free and connects police, fire, ambulance and mountain rescue. The 112 Bulgaria app is not a general tourist safety app. It provides registered text access specifically for Bulgarian and foreign users with hearing or speech disabilities. A traveler who needs that accommodation should install and activate it before an emergency; everyone else should save and call 112 directly. In the mountains, carry suitable clothing, water, power and offline navigation, share the route and check current weather and closures. The Ministry of Tourism also publishes Mountain Rescue Service contacts, but 112 can forward an emergency signal. No app replaces an official road closure, mountain guide, rescue instruction or travel insurance that covers the planned activity.
