What to know about Intercity Transport in Hungary

MÁVPlusz is now the correct official app for Hungarian trains and interurban VOLÁN buses. It replaces the old MÁV app as features move across during 2026. Use it for direct domestic tickets, mandatory reservations, Hungary and county passes, many local fare products and seated international trains. Since June 15, 2026, international tickets are available in the new app, but couchette and sleeper products still need the official jegy.mav.hu website. The migration is not completely finished. The old app remains temporarily available and the website is the dependable fallback if MÁVPlusz lacks a feature, fails payment or does not show the desired journey. Create each passenger with their full legal name and date of birth exactly as shown on identification. Check the route, date, departure station, train and reservation before paying because electronic tickets can be passenger, route or train specific. Keep the matching identification and save the ticket, PDF or widget offline before leaving reliable service. A reservation can be compulsory on InterCity trains and discounted products can have restrictive conditions. Buy popular Lake Balaton, weekend and international services when the plan is firm, but read the refund terms first. Check MÁVINFORM or the official journey information again on travel day because engineering work, replacement buses and platform changes occur. Regional or suburban tickets are not all sold in the same way, and a local city ticket does not automatically cover the intercity portion. For cross-border trips, compare the direct operator's current fare and conditions, then book with the operator that actually issues the chosen journey rather than an unverified reseller.
