What to know about Intercity Transport in Netherlands

NS is the principal app for domestic rail planning, live platforms, cancellations, maintenance and tickets. It also plans buses, trams and metros, but 9292 remains the cleaner nationwide door-to-door companion when a journey mixes operators. For a standard second-class train trip, tap a compatible contactless card at the station gate or pole and tap the same card or device at the destination. No registration, top-up or ticket purchase is required. Foreign contactless Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and V PAY cards are supported, with a few issuer and virtual-card exceptions. Each passenger needs a separate card or device. Buying an ordinary e-ticket in NS is useful when a card fails, when you need a product not available through a simple tap, or when keeping travelers on separate cards is impractical. Load a mobile barcode ticket in the NS app before approaching a gate so the wallet does not trigger instead. Some faster domestic routes require a separate Intercity direct supplement, which NS displays in the journey advice. International trains use NS International or the foreign operator named in the itinerary, not an ordinary OVpay tap. Check the app again immediately before departure because engineering works can change platforms and add replacement buses. OV-fiets is not a walk-up tourist bike scheme: official rules require a personal OV-chipkaart carrying OV-fiets or NS Flex, and the new OV-pas cannot yet rent one. Short-stay visitors should use a visitor-facing rental shop instead.

Pro tip: For a normal second-class trip, tap the same compatible card or device in and out. Use the app for live changes and tickets or supplements that a simple tap does not cover.
