You don't need to install every messenger used in Greece. If a confirmation page, official website or known contact publishes WhatsApp, use the account you already have. If it publishes only a phone number, call or text it instead of guessing that the same number accepts chat.79
Rakuten Viber's verified Greece community displays 1.9 million members. That confirms a substantial Greek-language Viber channel, but it is not an active-user total and does not prove that a particular hotel, driver or ferry office monitors Viber. Install it when a contact provides the channel rather than because an old app ranking says you must.3
Chat is useful for a meeting point, late arrival or door instruction. A cancellation, refund, required fee or change of payment account needs a stronger record. Return to the booking confirmation or platform thread, compare the stated policy and use a separately published support route before sending money.910
Booking.com warns that phishing messages may quote convincing dates and costs, then urgently request payment details to preserve a stay. It says card details will not be requested by WhatsApp, text, email or phone. Airbnb also prohibits moving pre-booking communication or required reservation payment outside its platform, apart from defined exceptions shown in the booking flow.910
Both services tie account access to a phone number. WhatsApp describes SMS or call verification when setting up the account and when suspicious access requires identity checks. Keep the registered number reachable if your account may need recovery, and do not change the account number merely because the phone starts using a Greek data SIM or eSIM.87
Viber setup uses a six-digit SMS or phone-call code. Viber says activation while abroad requires continued access to that number, and changing to a new number requires the new SIM to receive its code. Back up the account before a deliberate number or device change; a travel day is a poor time to discover that the old line is unreachable.45
Enable two-step verification and a recovery method before the trip. Viber's PIN is used for a new phone, reactivation and account changes. WhatsApp provides two-step verification and prompts for identity checks when it detects suspicious takeover attempts.67
Never forward an SMS activation code, two-step PIN, card security code or device-linking prompt to a hotel, driver or supposed support agent. If a familiar contact suddenly asks for money, verify through another saved number before acting. Block and report an account that cannot pass that check.769
For immediate police, fire, coastguard or medical assistance, use 112 rather than WhatsApp or Viber. Greece's civil-protection ministry says 112 is free and operates 24 hours a day. A mobile call can be placed without a SIM and from a locked device. The service also accepts SMS, MMS, email at contact@112.gov.gr and contact through the gov.gr app.1
If voice is unavailable, make an emergency message operational: state what happened, where it happened, when it happened and whether anyone is injured. Keep the line available for a reply. A private host or tour company may never see an emergency message in time, so contact 112 directly.1
Greece sends urgent public warnings through cell broadcast. The ministry says updated smartphones receive the written alert with a distinctive sound, and phones sold in Greece from December 2019 onward have the feature enabled automatically. Keep emergency alerts enabled on your own device.2
Do not mute or dismiss an alert because an accommodation chat has not mentioned the event. Read the warning, follow the authorities' instructions and preserve phone power. Registered SMS, email and voice-alert options exist, but cell broadcast on a compatible phone does not require a Viber or WhatsApp account.2
