What to know about Transit in Greece

There is no single national urban-transit app. In Athens, use Google Maps or another familiar planner to understand the route, then check OASA Telematics for the official daily bus schedule, stop arrivals and vehicle positions. This distinction matters because recent users report that general map apps can show nominal services that were canceled or changed. OASA's app received several updates in 2026, but its current iOS rating and reviews also describe crashes and missing data. Treat it as a useful official feed with a website fallback, not a guaranteed tracker. It covers buses and trolleybuses, not every metro function. Athens visitors usually do not need a ticket app. OASA's Tap2Ride accepts eligible contactless Visa and Mastercard cards or supported phone wallets on buses, trolleybuses, metro and tram, including specific airport products. Keep the payment credential separate from other cards and use the same physical card or device consistently. In Thessaloniki, the official TheTA app can buy and activate bus QR tickets, but the authority currently documents separate ticket and card systems for buses and the metro. Do not assume one fare medium covers both. Elsewhere, local networks, KTEL operators and island buses use their own timetables and sales arrangements. Buy and validate the correct ticket, check the last return, and allow for traffic or seasonal schedule changes. A taxi is safer than the last possible bus when missing a flight or ferry would be expensive.

Pro tip: Use it to verify a bus after planning the route elsewhere, and keep the official website as a fallback if the app crashes.
