What to know about Finance in Vietnam

An ordinary visitor does not need a Vietnamese banking app. Bring at least two physical cards from different networks, enable overseas use, know each issuer's withdrawal and foreign-transaction fees, and keep the cards separately. Larger hotels, malls, supermarkets and restaurants often accept international cards, but many small businesses take cash or a local bank QR transfer. Maintain a practical reserve of Vietnamese đồng and do not depend on finding a card terminal in a rural area, market or family-run guesthouse. Use an ATM attached to a recognized bank or inside a staffed location, inspect the machine, cover the keypad and cancel if the fee or exchange terms are unclear. Operator fees and withdrawal limits vary by bank, card and machine. Recent travelers often report that VPBank does not add a local ATM fee to foreign cards, but reports conflict and this is not a guarantee. Your own issuer can still charge. If an ATM or terminal offers to convert the amount into your home currency, decline that conversion and choose Vietnamese đồng so your card network handles the exchange. Wise can be useful for eligible customers who already have its card or multi-currency account, but it does not create a Vietnamese bank account and cannot normally pay an ordinary VietQR bank-transfer code. Do not install a local bank app or open an account for a short trip merely to copy resident payment habits. Use authorized exchange businesses, compare the net amount and count notes before leaving. Keep bank contacts, card-freeze controls, insurance details and an independent emergency reserve available offline.

Wise

An optional travel card and currency account for eligible customers, useful for card spending and exchange rather than VietQR.

Pro tip: Use it only if available in your home country. Choose VND at terminals and ATMs, and do not expect Wise to scan ordinary local bank-transfer QR codes.
