Banking and financial services, curated for travelers visiting Turkey.
No Turkish banking or finance app is appropriate for a normal short visit. Local banks, wallets, and money-transfer products are built for residents or existing customers and can require Turkish identity, address, phone, or account verification. Before departure, confirm that the home bank and card apps work, that the traveler can still receive or generate authentication codes, and that the issuer knows how to handle a lost card abroad. Enable transaction alerts, save the issuer's official international number, and know how to freeze a card without relying on the same lost phone. Carry two payment methods separately and keep limited emergency cash. A Wise or Revolut account can still be useful when the traveler already qualifies for it at home, but it does not remove Turkish ATM fees, guarantee foreign-card acceptance, or justify a Turkey-specific recommendation. Compare the amount in Turkish lira, decline dynamic currency conversion, and check both the ATM operator's charge and the home issuer's withdrawal or foreign-exchange fee before confirming. Avoid financial activity over untrusted public Wi-Fi and never provide a one-time code, card photograph, remote screen access, or transfer to someone claiming to fix a payment. Travel insurance should cover the itinerary, medical treatment, planned activities, and evacuation. The European Health Insurance Card and Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Turkey. A working home-bank app, payment redundancy, accessible emergency funds, and suitable insurance are more useful than installing a local fintech after landing.
