What to know about Utilities in Turkey

No emergency or utility app is essential for every visitor. The national number 112 covers police, ambulance, and fire. Save it, but also keep the accommodation, insurer, airline, tour operator, and embassy or consulate contacts offline. Turkey regularly experiences earthquakes, and summer wildfires, extreme heat, flash floods, landslides, snow, and storms can close roads or interrupt services. AFAD publishes official earthquake and disaster information. Its AFAD Emergency app includes assistance features, but official setup instructions require identity and phone verification, so it should not be presented as a universal tourist download. The separate AFAD earthquake app offers English earthquake information, but a notification app is not a substitute for knowing what to do. Read earthquake guidance before travel, identify exits and assembly instructions at the accommodation, keep shoes, documents, water, medication, and a battery pack accessible, and follow local authorities after an event. Never use a lift during an earthquake or enter a damaged building. Wildfire season is commonly April through October; leave immediately if ordered and never drive into smoke or floodwater. Avoid demonstrations and police operations because they can turn violent and disrupt transit. Stay away from military and security facilities and do not photograph them. Current official advice warns against travel within 10 km of the Syrian border and identifies other regional restrictions. Check advice for the actual itinerary because insurance may be invalid in an advised-against area. Downloading one app is less important than current alerts, an offline plan, charged devices, insurance, and compliance with local instructions.
